On a nice Saturday afternoon trip, Doug and I found two AT&T UNIX PCs at a yard sale. The owner of the units had them since he worked for TWA. For the most part, the systems had only the OS and a few user accounts. There wasn’t even a compiler! These boxes were known as “The computer with the future built in”, and this shining review from Byte magazine gives such praise as “runs multiple processes well enough to compare with a VAX” and “The power of the 10-MHz 68010 processor really shows.” Although the software that came with these machines was quite limited, they were quite expandable with the built-in 20 megabyte hard drive. However, much of the original software is gone today, except for an archive on taronga.com, home of other wonderful things like the lyrics to Alice’s NNTP Server, a fun but unrelated tale. Also of note, AT&T had an app store, known as ‘The Store‘, which was a dial-up UUCP system.

The first boot in years.
System Specs:
- Motorola 68010 CPU at 10 MHz
- Intel 80×86 expansion card( for running MS DOS )
- 1 Megabyte RAM (Shared between UNIX and DOS )
- 2 serial ports ( 1 built-in, 1 expansion card )
- 3 button mouse
- Graphics system ( Not X )
- Monochrome monitor (not removable / upgradeable)
- System V UNIX R2/R3
- 1200 baud modem
- Phone control ports( Call waiting, call management, …)
- 1 printer port

Banner is older than I knew.
